What Is the NFB BELL Program?
The National Federation of the Blind BELL (Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning) program is a two week, nonresidential program designed to provide intensive Braille instruction to blind and low vision children ages 4-12 during the summer months.  The program serves all blind students but is meant to benefit students who may not be receiving enough Braille instruction during the school year and who could improve in skills through increased summer instruction.  Activities are engaging and hands on, and promote positive attitudes about blindness.  The program is modeled after the successful 2008 BELL program led by the NFB of Maryland.  This is the first time New York State will host a program, and we look forward to a great first year and expansion to multiple sites in 2015!  For more information, visit www.nfb.org/bell-program

  • Blind adult role models part of and visiting the program will speak to students and parents daily during lunch to discuss their career and how Braille and nonvisual techniques contribute to their career and daily living success.
  • Children receive gift bags at the conclusion of the program and earn free Braille books through our daily reading program.

Transportation
Parents have the option to either transport their child/children to the program for gas and mileage reimbursement at the conclusion of the program OR sign up their child/children for transportation in one of two of our 15 passenger vans to and from home or to and from a pickup/dropoff site designated in agreement with parent (in such case parent will be reimbursed gas/mileage).
